JRL calls for shutdown on Feb 9, 11 to mark Afzal Guru and Maqbool Death hangings

Srinagar: The joint resistance leadership Thursday called for a complete shutdown on February 9 and 11 on the “martyrdom” anniversaries of JKLF founder Muhammad Maqbool Butt and parliament attack convict Muhammad Afzal Guru.

A statement of JRL, comprising of octogenarian Hurriyat patriarch Syed Ali Geelani, Hurriyat (M) chairperson Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and JKLF chairperson Yasin Malik urged people to observe complete shutdown on Saturday and Monday, February 9 and 11 2019.

The leadership said that a protest demonstration will be held in Lalchowk Srinagar on Saturday to demand the mortal remains of Bhat ad Guru. A memorandum will also be dispatched to UN secretary general.

Paying tributes to the duo, the leadership said that the struggle and sacrifices rendered by Muhammad Maqbool Butt and Muhammad Afazl Guru are glorious chapters of Kashmir’s  resistance history.

“Indian not only hanged these Kashmiris at gallows but also has kept their mortal remains under its custody till now. The struggle, passion for freedom and sacrifices of these great Kashmiris will always remain a beacon light for Kashmiri Nation.”

Giving details of protest program, JRL said that on Saturday, a complete protest shut down will be observed across the valley. “On 10th February, prayers will be held in all main Masajid for these martyrs.”

Recalling the sacrifice of Muhammad Maqbool Butt, a complete shutdown will be observed on Monday, February 11 2019. “Besides this protest shutdown, protest demonstration will be held at Lal Chowk Srinagar demanding the return back of mortal remains of these martyrs to their motherland for a proper burial. A memorandum will also be sent to UN secretary general, demanding for the return of mortal remains of Muhammad Maqbool Butt and Muhammad Afzal Guru.”
