Kashmir wakes to fresh blanket of snow, 9 inches thick in Gulmarg

Srinagar: Valleyites woke up to a blanket of fresh snow on Saturday morning even as night temperature rose across Kashmir. Gulmarg recorded 9 inches of fresh snowfall and the world famous skiing resort witnessed night temperature of minus 0.7 Degrees Celsius, a meteorological department official said.
He said Srinagar, the summer capital of the state, recorded 4 cms of fresh snow since overnight and had a low of minus 2.0 degrees Celsius.
Qazginund, the gateway town of Kashmir, also witnesses 4 cms of fresh snow and the minimum temperature settled at minus 3.4 degree Celsius while Kokernag, also in south Kashmir, recorded a minimum of minus 4.5 degree Celsius and had a snowfall of 1.5 cms.
Pahalgam, which also serves as base camp to Amarnath cave shrine, recorded a low of minus 4.4 Degrees Celsius and had snowfall of 1cm.
Kupwara town in north Kashmir registered a low of minus 0.8 degree Celsius last night and had 11cms of fresh snow, the official said.
‘Chillai-Kalan’ ends on January 31, but the cold wave continues even after that in Kashmir.
The 40-day period is followed by a 20-day long ‘Chillai-Khurd’ (small cold) and a 10-day long ‘Chillai-Bachha’ (baby cold).
The meteorological department has predicted five days of snowfall beginning today, peaking on Monday and Tuesday.
