Heaps of garbage pile in Srinagar as SMC fails to end deadlock with protesting employees

Srinagar: Heaps of garbage could be seen piling on every lane and road of Srinagar as the garbage has not been lifted from last couple of days since the employees of Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) are on strike from past few days.

The Srinagarities call it an outcome of rivalry between SMC Mayor and Dy Mayor who have been leveling allegations against each other from past couple of days.

The heaps of garbage could be seen piling on the roads as well as interiors of Srinagar, thus causing foul smell from it and leaving the people of Srinagar to lurch at large.

Commercial Hub Lal Chowk, Khanyar, Baba Demb, Batamaloo, Karan Nagar area among the areas where garbage is seen piling on the roadsides.

The locals said that the non-lifting of garbage from their respective areas is the outcome of the rivalry between SMC Mayor and its Deputy.

They demanded immediate attention towards Srinagar, which they said is turning into Achan rapidly due to the presence of heaps of garbage in their areas.

Umar Ahmad a social activist from Baghat ward, where from Mayor emerged as winner in the recently held Municipal polls, held a unique protest in Lal Chowk here.

Umar was seen sitting on the garbage dumped on the mid of the road at Lal Chowk while carrying placards reading ‘Smart City a gift from SMC Srinagar’.

Both SMC Mayor and Deputy Mayor have urged the employees of SMC to end their strike and resume their duties.

The Mayor SMC in a tweet also promised action against the Corporator against whom employees are protesting.

Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) Commissioner, Peerzada Hafizullah who was holding a meeting with the employees while INS contacted him to get his comments.

“The negotiation with the employees is going on,” Hafizullah said.
