Severe cold grips Kashmir; Pahalgam coldest in Valley, Leh in J&K

Srinagar: Severe cold wave continued in Kashmir Valley and the Ladakh region on Sunday as Leh recorded minus 14.0 degrees Celsius on Sunday. The 40-day long harsh winter period of Chillai Kalan started on Friday and will continue till January 30.
Minimum temperature continued to be below freezing point with Srinagar recording at minus 4.4, in Pahalgam minus 6.7 and in Gulmarg minus 5.5 degrees Celsius. The mercury in Qazigund, the gateway town of Kashmir, settled at minus 4.2, Kokernag minus 3.8 while Kupwara recorder a low of minus 5.6 degrees Celsius.
The weatherman forecast no change in conditions for at least the next week in the entire region.
“For the next week we are not expecting any change in weather. The cold wave conditions are likely to prevail as the weather is expected to remain cold and dry,” a MeT official said.
