Srinagar: The traffic mismanagement and “wrong announcements” of one-way traffic on Srinagar-Jammu highway on Tuesday led by massive traffic jams at different places on the thoroughfare, the only surface link connecting Kashmir with rest of the world.
Reports said that hundreds of vehicles remained stuck on both sides of the highway, despite announcements of one-way traffic by the traffic authorities.
They said vehicles including load carriers, private and passenger vehicles remained stuck on the thoroughfare.
“The announcement of one-way traffic is nothing but misleading. The traffic authorities are allowing traffic on both sides leading to mess,” said Nazir Ahmad, a Srinagar-bound commuter who was stuck on the highway for hours.
The children seem to be the biggest sufferers and most of them could be seen restless as they had to spend hours in traffic jams.
“They should make proper announcements rather than hoodwink people and put them to unnecessary trouble,” a group of commuters told INS. “It seems there is no accountability for putting people of Jammu and Kashmir to trouble and subject them to mental agony,” they added.
Shopkeepers and locals alleged that no cop was seen on the highway for clearing the jam and streamlining the traffic movement.
Meanwhile, despite repeated attempts, no official could be contacted for the comment.
