Budgam: People in nearly seven localities surrounding the water supply scheme at Budgam’s Kuzwera are drinking unfiltered water as the scheme installed some six years ago functions without filtration plant.

As the plant lacks filtration system, people of the area alleged that the process of the bleaching is done manually and the water quality doesn’t qualify such safe as Public Health Engineering (PHE) department must ensure.

“The water directly comes from river Jhelum and the water supply scheme that supplies drinking water to more than seven villages comprising thousands of population without filtration plant, how can PHE department guarantee safe water, which is manually bleached,”  Mohammad Younis, a local resident told to The INS.

The scheme was made functional last year but the work on this plant was started some 6 years back. “It is irony that it has been almost a half-decade and the authorities are yet to install a filtration system at the plant to ensure the safe drinking water to the area,” Irshad Ahamd, another local said.

The villages that this water supply scheme feeds include Kuzwera, Gowharpora, Sanzipora, Magraypora, Batapura, Pampura, Narander, and Checkpora.

Locals have urged upon the authorities to install a filtration plant at the scheme before an outbreak of any major disease.
