Sopore: A gunfight between government forces and militants is going on in Sopore area of north Kashmir’s Barmulla district. A soldier, Brejesh Kumar of army’s 22 Rashtriya Rifles, was injured in the initial gunfight and reportedly one militant has been killed but there was no official confirmation hitherto.
The encounter, according to a police officer, ensued after militants fired on a joint team of government forces soon after a cordon-and-search-operation was thrown by them following “credible inputs” about the presence of militants in Pazalpora area of Sopore. Reportedly three militants are trapped but the police officer did not confirm. “The operation is ongoing and we cannot give specific number of militants at this point in time,” the officer said. Meanwhile authorities have closed all colleges and Higher Secondary Schools in Baramulla, Sopore and Kreeri along with all educational institutions in Rafiabad.
