Kashmir observes shutdown against militant, civilian killings; Police impose restrictions in Srinagar parts

Srinagar: The Jammu and Kashmir police and CRPF on Thursday imposed severe restrictions in parts of Srinagar city as the Kashmir valley is observing a shutdown against the killing of two militants and a civilian in a gunfight on Wednesday.

Government has also put in place increased deployment of forces and entry, exit points of the Old City have been sealed. At several places in the city, witnesses said, forces stopped pedestrian and vehicular movement.

All shops and business establishments remained shut across Kashmir wile transport also remained off the roads. The call for shutdown had been given by the Joint Resistance Leadership.

Two militants Mehrajuddin Bangroo, a top Lashkar commander and Fahad Mushtaq Wani were killed in a gunfight on Wednesday with government forces. A civilian Rayees Ahmad was also killed by the forces in the encounter.

The trio was laid to rest at the martyrs’ graveyard in Eidgah last evening amid thousands of people participating in their funeral prayers.
