Kupwara: Protests and clashes are going on near the encounter site in Handwara area of Kupwara district where government forces and militants are engaged in a fierce gunbattle.

According to witnesses people including women and children have joined the protest in Shotgund village of Handwara.
Government forces used tear gas shells to disperse the protesters.

“For thirty minutes now, gun fire has come to halt,” they said.

Amid gunfight between holed up militants and government forces in Handwara area of Kupwara district authorities on Thursday ordered closure of educational institutions in many districts across valley.

In view of the gunfight, the district administration Kupwara ordered closure of educational institutions in the district.

The IUST, Awantipora in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district will also remain closed on Thursday “in view of apprehensions,” in-charge PRO IUST, Dr Aijaz Qureshi said.

An official said that district administration Pulwama has ordered closure of all educational institutions in the district for Thursday.

Reports of closure of educational institutions are also coming from north Kashmir’s Bandipora.

Authorities in Baramulla have also closed schools and colleges in the district in view of the gunfight that broke out after a CASO was launched in the frontier district of Kupwara this morning.
