Srinagar: UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has congratulated Barham Salih on his election and swearing-in as Iraqi President. He was elected to post by the Iraqi parliament on Tuesday.
In a statement Farhan Haq, deputy spokesman of Guterres said that the Secretary-General hopes the election of the Salih will pave the way for the ‘swift formation of an inclusive government in line with constitutional timelines.’
Salih, a Kurdish politician has previously served as prime minister of the Kurdish Regional Government (KRG) between 2009 until 2011 and has been deputy prime minister of Iraq under Ayad Allawi, who became prime minister after the fall of Saddam Hussein.
He has graduated from Cardiff University’s Architecture Department in 1983 and has a master’s degree in engineering from Liverpool University.
Salih has founded Sulaymaniyah American University and chairs its board of trustees.
