Chairperson of J&K State Human Rights Commission, Justice (Retd) Bilal Nazki, recently took Suo-moto cognizance to a matter regarding Drug Addiction menace in the State.

While personally visiting to Drug De-addiction & Rehabilitation Centre Police Control Room Srinagar, the Chairperson was informed by the doctors that thousands of people visiting the centre every year was a pointer to the fact that there was something wrong in the system.

He was also told by the doctor In-charge of the Centre that various girls also visit the centre as out-door patients, some of them need to be admitted but there are no arrangements for indoor lady patients. Expenditure is also being incurred by the families of the patients and in many cases the families are poor and cannot afford to bear expenses.

While taking note of press clippings and social media reports regarding the subject, Chairperson observed that a comprehensive policy was needed to stop the menace and to save the future generation from getting exposed to this menace

Government, the chairperson said, needs policy which will take care of primarily four things: Stop the supply, sale and purchase of drugs;  destroy the crops locally grown and completely stop cultivation of such crops; Devise a plan by which people of different age groups can be targeted and made aware of the consequences of drug abuse and  create sufficient infrastructure and upgrade the facilities for De-addiction & rehabilitation of those already addicted.

The chairperson ordered that copy be sent to the Chief Secretary “who may respond to this order by next date.”
