“Yesterday, Srinagar police received a complaint from two Israeli tourists, stating that while their stay in a house boat in Dal Lake Srinagar, they found that 1050 US $ (dollars) missing from their bag, amounting to INR 70,000,’ a police spokesman said.

On receiving the complaint, a police team of Police Post Nehru Park led by in-charge Police Post Nehru Park Sameer Ahmad Lone started investigating the matter. During the investigation, the spokesman said that a number of suspects including the owner of house boat and staff were called in and questioned.

“During questioning, a suspect was zeroed in who after sustained questioning confessed the crime and later returned the money. However, the Tourists on humanitarian basis forgave the accused and withdrew the complaint, keeping in view the poor financial background of the accused,” the spokesman said.

Meanwhile, police has asked hotel owners association as well as houseboat owners association that they must inform the concerned Police Station as and when they hire any staff for their hotels or houseboats.

It is pertinent to mention that the accused was appointed by the houseboat owner without ascertaining the credentials from the concerned Police Station, the spokesman said.

“The duo tourists thanked Srinagar police particularly police team Nehru Park for the timely help and instant recovery of their money and left for their respective destinations happily.”
