According to initial reports three army soldiers were injured and were evacuated to 92 Base Army Hospital in Srinagar. One of them succumbed to injuries. He has been identified as Ram Krishan of 1 RR.

Meanwhile internet has been also suspended in Kulgam while train service to and fro south Kashmir and Srinagar has been suspended, sources said.

The encounter started after government forces last night launched cordon and search operation in Wani Mohalla locality in Khudwani after inputs about presence of militants there.

As the forces were conducting searches, the hiding militants, believed to be two to three in number, fired upon the advancing forces, triggering firefight, which resulted in injuries to soldiers.

As the word about encounter spread, hundreds of locals came out of their houses despite downpour and started clashing with the forces deployed in the area in bid to aid the militants to escape, reports said.

After initial exchange of fire around 11 pm last night there was a halt in the operation but the exchange of Gunfire resumed in the morning and is currently going on, said an official. (with inputs from Sameer Ahmad)
