Srinagar: Authorities have suspended internet in Shopian and Pulwama districts of south Kashmir after Saima Wani, 18, injured amid gunfight in Chaigund village of Shopian district on January 24, succumbed in a Srinagar hospital last night.
Saima was the sister of the Hizb’s Sameer Wani, who was killed in the gunfight. Besides two militants, a teenaged civilian Shakir Ahmad Wani, were killed in the gunfight and two girls including Saima were injured.
Authorities had restored internet in the twin district on February 3 after suspending it for 11 days. Then internet was snapped on January 24 following the gunfight in Shopian.
Also on January 27, Army shot dead two youth and injured another, who later died at SKIMS, in Shopian’s Ganawpora village.
The locals were resisting army’s move to remove the banners of the slain Hizb ul Mujahideen militant.
The authorities had snapped internet services to “stop rumor mongering in the areas.”
