Pulwama: Lalpora Jheel at Pampore, the only lake in this south Kashmir district, was once a source of clean drinking water but is facing official neglect since past many years.
Locals talking to INS said the lake has turned into a dumping site for garbage, wood pieces and other wastes.
The lake is located near the saffron fields, which can become a great source of income for people and government if upgraded, locals said.
“Lalpora Jheel is a very beautiful lake and covers a vast area. As it is located near the saffron fields, the lake needs to be upgraded for the welfare of both people as well as government,” a local resident Tariq Ahmad said.
He said the migratory birds visiting the lake in different seasons add more beauty to it.
The residents said the MLA Pampore Zahoor Ahmad Mir, who is also the Minster of State for Forest, Ecology & Environment had assured them of upgrading the lake but nothing has been done so far.
“The MLA even promised of upgrading the lake with facilities besides affiliating it with eco-tourism. After his assurances, we never saw any official visiting here to review the lake,” they said.
“The lake has a lot of land available at many sides where some parks can be made. If developed, the lake can become an attractive spot for visitors,” the locals added.
When contacted, the MLA Pampore didn’t comment on the issue saying he was busy in assembly and dropped the call.
Meanwhile, locals have requested the government to upgrade the lake.
