Sopore: Street vendors on Wednesday staged protest demonstration against Municipal Council sopore for damaging their property during encroachment drive in this north Kashmir’s Baramullah district.
The angry street vendors who were protesting near sub district hospital sopore demanded alternative sites to make their both ends meet soon after the municipal council damaged their properties during an encroachment drive.
“In case government wants to uproot street vendors for the smooth movement of traffic, then they should allot us alternative substitute where we can make our livelihood,” Sajad, a vendor demanded.
“We had been earning our livelihood through the street vends in the town. If we are removed from the place, it would be difficult for us to earn a livelihood and our family will be in trouble,” he added.
Mushtaq, another vendor told INS, “We belong to lower class and are being forced to hit the streets due municipal council’s mother steeply approach,” adding, “We are not against the government but at least we should be given alternative space to run our source of income.”
When contacted Executive Officer of Municipal Council Sopore Miteen Ahmed, he said, “We had already informed them to leave place for making smooth movement of traffic in the town and even repeated warnings were made today before starting the drive.”
However, later police reached to the spot and assured protesters that matter will be taken to the higher authorities.
