Jammu: Terming the death of a 50-year-old rape accused in police lockup as a matter of concern, government on Monday ordered a magisterial inquiry into incident to be completed in four weeks “positively”.
Subash Chander Mahasha alias ‘Kaka’ son of Amar Nath, a resident of Shivalik Puram Janipur Colony, was arrested on February 2 allegedly on charges of trespassing and rape.
According to an order issued by Deputy Commissioner Jammu, the accused complained of uneasiness around 3 am in the lockup at Janipur police station and was subsequently taken to Government Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
“A Medical Board of Doctors has been constituted for conduct of Post-mortem,” said Deputy Commissioner Kumar Rajeev Ranjan in an order.
“It is matter of concern that the death has occurred during the Police Custody and it becomes mandatory for this office to ascertain the causes of death of the accused person,” Ranjan said and appointed Mohd Alyas Khan , Sub Divisional Magistrate, Jammu-North as Enquiry Officer to conduct an enquiry into the matter and to ascertain the causes of death of the ‘kaka’. The SDM has been ordered to submit his report within four weeks “positively.”
