Srinagar: Compared to 2016, cyber crimes have doubled in Jammu and Kashmir last year, Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti said on Friday.
While 25 cases were registered in 2016, the number stood at 51 in 2017, she said in a written reply to a query by nominated MLA Anjum Fazili in state legislature. In 2015, 38 cyber crime cases were registered, Mehbooba, who is also state’s Home Minster, added.
“To tackle the cyber crimes in the State, three (03) Cyber Crime Police Cells one each at Jammu,
Srinagar and Crime Headquarters, J&K, have been established,” she said, adding, “Sufficient number of trained officers and staff has been deployed at Cyber Police Cells to investigate/monitor all crimes related to cyber offences.”
The Information Technology Act, 2000 amended in the year 2008 applicable in the State of Jammu and Kashmir, is a legal framework to curb the menace of Cyber Crime. In order to curb Cyber offences, various workshop, courses and special capsule course are being organized for the investigating officers to investigate the Cyber Crime cases, she said. “An advisory regarding Do’s and Don’ts is available on J&K Police Website wherein the commuters are informed about the use of Information Technology.”
Besides, she said, Crime Branch, J&K, through Print and electronic media and social media educate/sensitise the commuters not to share the information about their bank accounts, Debit and Credit Cards, PINs and passwords as also personal accounts with any one on phone or through mails. FIR, she said, are being lodged in Police Stations under Information Technology Act, 2000.
She said all the Police Stations have been provided with latest IT Gadgets/technologies to handle Cyber Crimes effectively. “A proposal for notifying Cyber Crime Police Stations alongwith creation of manpower is under consideration in consultation of the Finance Department,” she said.
