Srinagar: Police on Monday said that one militant was killed in an encounter with government forces at Chadoora in central Kashmir’s Budgam district.
Official sources said that a joint team of police, CRPF and army launched a joint cordon-and-search operation of Kaneera Patalgam village following specific information about the presence of militants there.
They said as the joint team was zeroing in, militants hiding in the area opened fire which was retaliated, triggering off an encounter.
A local news agency quoted SSP Tejinder Singh that during the gunfight one militant has been killed.
The CASO was launched on information that three militants were hiding in the area and initial militant casualties were based on the information.
Meanwhile, on hearing gunshots, scores of people mostly youth took to streets at Chadoora and its adjoining areas and start pelting stones on the government forces. They were trying to march towards the encounter site. The government forces also resorted to teargas shelling to disperse the protesting people.
As reported earlier, the authorities suspended internet in Pulwama and Budgam. A police officer told INS that it has been taken as precautionary measure to prevent the protests in the area.
