Srinagar: The weatherman on Wednesday forecast scattered rain or snow in Kashmir on January 5 even as night temperatures remained below sub-zero in the Valley.
An official of the meteorological department said that this summer capital of the state experienced another freezing night as minimum temperature settled at 4.1 degrees Celsius below zero as against minus 4.3 degrees Celsius the previous night.
The official said the mercury in Qazigund in south Kashmir settled at a low of minus 4.0 degree Celsius as against minus 4.6 C on previous night while Kokernag town recorded a low of minus 1.7 degree Celsius against minus 3.4 C on previous night.
The night temperature in Pahalgam, the hill resort in south Kashmir, recorded a low of minus 6.1 degree Celsius, up from minus 6.6 degrees Celsius on the previous night, and was the second coldest place in the Valley, the official said.
Kupwara town in north Kashmir registered a low of minus 3.8 degree Celsius last night, up from the previous night’s 4.3 degrees Celsius, the official said.
He said the mercury at the famous ski-resort of Gulmarg in north Kashmir settled at a low of minus 6.8 degrees Celsius as against minus 6.0 degrees Celsius on the previous night and was the coldest place in Valley.
“Weather will be mainly dry and cold over the state in next 24-hours but there is possibility of scattered rain or snow on January 5,” the official said. As per the official, ‘scattered’ rain or snow means a possibility of 26-50%.
