Kashmir may see light showers on Chillai-e-Kalan

Srinagar: The ‘Chillai-e-Kalan’, harshest period of winter, may see light showers, weatherman said on Sunday.
“There would be generally cloudy sky with possibility of rain or thunderstorm or duststorm on December 20 and possibility of light rain on December 21,” said an official of the meteorological department.
Chillai-e-Kalan, a 40-day long chilliest part of the season, starts on December 21 and is followed by a 20-day long ‘Chillai Khurd’ and a 10-day-long ‘Chilla Bachha’.
T he mercury in Srinagar plunged to a minimum of minus 3.7 degree Celsius, the weatherman said.
The night temperature in this summer capital of the state was three degrees below normal during this time of the season, the meteorological official said, indicating that the mercury would be same for next few days.
Gulmarg in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district was the coldest place in the Valley and recorded a low of minus -7.5C.
Pahalgam hill resort in south Kashmir was the second coldest recorded place in Kashmir with a low of minus 6 C, the official said.
The highway town of Qazigund in south Kashmir also below normal temperature, recording a low of minus 3.8C, while the night temperature in neighbouring Kokernag and north Kashmir Kupwara settled at minus 3.0C and minus 3.0C respectively.
The MET official said Leh town in frontier region of Ladakh was the coldest place in the state recording a low of minus 12C.
