Kulgam: Monkeys are damaging crops in Devsar area of Kulgam district, and other adjoining villages in close proximity to forests.
Locals told INS that monkeys have damaged paddy, walnut, apple and other crops ‘in lakhs from the last few months.’
Residents claimed that they fear sending their wards to schools fearing more attacks.
“They do chase kids, snatch their lunch boxes, books and even attack them,” residents said.
A Wildlife officer told INS, wishing anonymity, that they are unable to use firecrackers to shoo away monkeys as the local army camp has resisted the move.
“There is shortage of food in the forests, and their population is on rise, which has led to man-animal conflict in the area.”
