Srinagar: Dozens of Anganwadi workers on Monday went on hunger strike against the state government in favour of their demands, mainly increase in their wages.
Tasleema Subhan, the State President of Anganwadi Workers Association accused state government of adopting a ‘step mother approach’ towards the workers of the state despite working with full efficiency.
“The concerned minister does not pay heed towards our concerns and we have decided to hold an indefinite hunger strike till our demands are met,” Taslmeema said.
Another protester, Haseena Begum while talking to INS said that she has been serving as an Anganwari worker from over four decades and claimed that government has awarded her several times for the work she has done but “genuine wages are not paid to us.”
“From the election duty to adhar card service, we have been serving on all the fronts; I want to ask government why genuine wages are not given to us.”
The protesters also took a jibe at Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufi for women empowerment statements. “She often says that we want to empower women and today we ask her does meagre wages empower a women,” Begum said.
“Do they think a single mother can raise and educate children on mare Rs 3600,” protesting worker asked.
