Srinagar, Oct 17: A court in Shopian on Monday sentenced a teacher to undergo 20 years’ imprisonment, and imposed a fine of Rs 10 lakhs for sexually assaulting a minor girl in the south Kashmir’s district seven years ago.

According to prosecution, the accused Mohammad Maqbool Ganie, a resident of D. K Pora Shopian assaulted the minor girl while she was in his home for tuition.

A senior officer of prosecution said that the Principal District & Sessions Judge awarded 20 years imprisonment and also imposed Rs ten lakh fine with the direction the amount to be paid to the victim.

In the year 2015, the teacher had asked the student to come for tuition to his home where he raped her.

Subsequently, police registered a case FIR (No. 179/2015) under RPC sections 376/F, 342 and 506 of police station Shopian based on a complaint. After investigation, the police filed the chargesheet against the teacher who was posted at Government High School DK Pora Shopian. The chargesheet culminated into the conviction by the court last week.
