After days of rains, weather starts to improve in Jammu and Kashmir

Srinagar, April 23: Weather started improving in Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday after three days of light to moderate rains in plains and snowfall over higher reaches.

A meteorological department official here said that Srinagar, with 0.3 mm of rain in the last 24 hours till 0830 hours today, recorded a low of 10.3°C against 8.6°C on the previous night. The temperature, he said, was 1.4°C above normal during this time of the year for the summer capital.

Qazigund received 1.2 mm of rain during the time and recorded a low of 9.8°C against 5.2°C on the previous night. The temperature was above normal by 2.3°C for the gateway town of Kashmir, he said.

Kokernag, also in south Kashmir, had 1.4 mm of rain during the time and recorded a low of 7.8°C against 4.1°C on the previous night. It was 0.2°C above normal during this time of the season for the place, the official said.

Pahalgam, the famous resort in south Kashmir, had 2.1 mm of rain in the 24 hours and recorded a minimum of 2.5°C against 2.0°C last night. The temperature was 1.5°C below normal for the place, he said.

Gulmarg received 17.0 mm of rain during the time and recorded a low of 0.5°C against 0.0°C on the previous night, the official said. While 3.3°C is normal for the world famous skiing resort during this time of the season, the official said that the temperature was 2.8°C below normal for the place in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district.

Kupwara town in north Kashmir received 2.6 mm of rain during the time and recorded a low of 8.6°C against 8.1°C on the previous night. The temperature was 1.0°C above normal for the district, the official said.

Jammu recorded a low of 20.5°C against 18.1°C on the previous night, the official said. The temperature was 0.5°C ‘below’ normal for J&K’s winter capital, he said.

Banihal had 1.2 mm of rain in the 24 hours and recorded a low of 9.2°C while Batote recorded a low of 12.2°C and Bhaderwah 7.4°C, the official said.

“There is no forecast of any major rain during next week but a brief spell of occasional light rain with thunderstorm can’t be ruled out at some places,” the official added.
