Srinagar: Police has decided to take action against news groups on WhatsApp and other social media platforms for spreading rumours, resulting in law and order situations in the Kashmir Valley, Kashmir’s Inspector General of Police Muneer Ahmad Khan.
Talking to INS, the IGP said that the Police have launched a drive against these groups on social media from the past six to seven days to maintain law and order.
“We have identified some of these groups and are checking the background and profiles of the administrators of these groups and if found guilty, appropriate legal action would be initiated against them,” Khan said.
“Even if any action on my part results in violence and disorder, I am too part of the violence and same is the case with these groups on social media,” he added.
Recently, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) identified 117 suspects who allegedly used 70 Whatsapp groups to organize “stone-pelting” protests in the Valley.
According to a media report, many of these groups have administrators based in Pakistan and the Gulf countries.
According to Indian Express, the NIA identified the suspects after a six month probe into incidents of unrest in the valley.
Quoting sources, the report said that a team of undercover NIA officers infiltrated these groups by using intelligence inputs, technical surveillance, Global Positioning System ( GPS) and satellite imagery.
