Mercury plunges as rains abate in Kashmir, snowfall in Kupwara

Srinagar: Parts of Kashmir Valley including north Kashmir’s Kupwara district received fresh snowfall even as rains abated in Jammu and Kashmir after about 48 hours.
An official of the Meteorological office said that Srinagar received rainfall of 37mm in last 24 hours till 0830 hours on Saturday while Qazigund, Kokernag, and Pahalgam in south Kashmir received 36.4mm, 39.2mm and 13mm downpour respectively for the same time. Kupwara district in north Kashmir recorded snow and rainfall equivalent to 47mm of rain during the time and was highest in the entire valley. The world-famous Ski resort of Gulmarg also accumulated fresh snowfall and recorded rain or snow equivalent to 36.4mm. It recorded a night temperature of minus 3.2 degrees Celsius, the official said.
The minimum temperature in Srinagar stood at 1.3 degrees Celsius against normal of 6.1 degrees Celsius for this time of the season, he said.
Regarding Jammu, the official said, the winter capital of the J&K had 65.6mm of rainfall in 24 hours.
The waterman has predicted improvement in weather even as it said light rains may fall at isolated places in next 24-hours.
The MeT office has also issued a yellow warning for isolated thunders and lightning with gusty winds of 30-40 Kmph in both Jammu and Kashmir regions on March 31 and April 1.
There are four types colour codes signifying the level of caution: green (which means no action), yellow (situation to be watched), amber (government agencies need to be prepared for severe weather) and red (action needed by the agencies).
