Srinagar: Even after seven years elapsed since the residents living on the embankment of river Jhelum here were evacuated, the authorities have utterly failed to rehabilitate the families, the promises done with them were not fulfilled.

Demanding rehabilitation, scores of families under the banner of Jhelum River House Rehabilitation Union (JRHRU) assembled at Srinagar’s press Enclave here to demand justice.

The families including men as well as women told The INS here that they were living on the embankment of river Jhelum from DC office to Fateh Kadal, adding that they were asked to evacuate and were promised of land in return.

However, the agitating families said that all the promises proved hoax on the ground as despite elapsing seven years, the government has miserably failed to take any step regarding the promises made with them, adding that such apathy has compelled them to hit the streets against the government to press for their demands.

The families further stated that from 2012 to 2019, over 100 families are facing tremendous hardships in absence of their home, adding that they have been betrayed by the government.

Meanwhile, they appealed Jammu and Kashmir Governor Satya Pal Malik to intervene into the matter and take necessary steps so that they could heave a sigh of relief.
