Kulgam: Two militants and a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) of police’s Special Operation Group were killed while an army Major was injured in a gunfight in south Kashmir’s Kulgam district on Sunday.

The fallen DSP has been identified as Aman Thakur while identity of the militants is being ascertained officials said.

The gunfight at Turigam village of the Kulgam district started on Sunday afternoon after a joint team of army’s 34 RR, CRPF and SOG launched cordon and search operation, official said.

Sources said that the DSP Operations Aman Thakur received critical bullet wounds in his head during the encounter and was immediately taken to a nearby hospital where doctors declared him brought dead on arrival. The army officer of Major rank also suffered a bullet injury in his leg and was hospitalized at Army’s 92 base hospital, the officer said. “Two militant have been killed”, the officer said. Meanwhile clashes erupted near the scene of gunfight as scores youth pelted stones at the government forces. The government forces fired teargas shells to disperse the protesting youth. When reports last came in, the clashes were going on.
