Srinagar: Students of SSM College of Engineering have designed a wheelchair controlled with the help of head motion, hand gestures, voice command, Android mobile phone and even tongue movement.
The project “MANO-AMIGA” ( Helping Hands) has been designed by the students—Omar Majid, Tabish Bhat, Hafsa Bhat and Shah Faisal under the guidance of HOD Mechanical Engineering, Er. Mohammad Nayeem and Co-guidance of Er. Aatif Haqani, according to a statement by the college.
“SSM College of Engineering feels extremely proud of the students of Mechanical Engineering. These students had a firm belief that engineering is all about to transform the human sufferings into blessings and with this project, they proved it true,” the college said.
Serious accidents, injuries often result in disabilities of some body parts and in some worst cases the whole body, the statement said. “The aim of the project was not only to make life easy for these patients but also to make a design which is far better and at the same time available at affordable rates as well.”
The wheelchair can be controlled with the help of head motion, hand gestures, voice command, Android mobile phone and even tongue movement for patients with greater disability, it said.
“The chair includes a GPS module as well as a Bluetooth module with which we can locate the disabled person in case of any future mishap/accident,” the statement said, adding, “This doesn’t stop here, the features in the project are like the universes put together.”
The special features include heart rate monitoring, body temperature monitoring and GPS/GSM, it said. The chair has been molded into a ‘machine-care taker’ where it sends SMS to patients family/doctor in case of any emergency.
“The college administration and the department of Mechanical Engineering are overwhelmed by the efforts of these students and wish them a successful and prosperous life ahead. We hope that they’ll continue to work with the same zest and prove an asset for the college in the society.”
