Srinagar: More than sixteen hours after power supply was snapped, the authorities hitherto have been unsuccessful in restoring the electricity in most parts of Kashmir Valley.
Kashmir Valley is reeling under bone chilling cold and spent the night without electricity following damage to main supply line due to the snowfall which at places has been more than six inches in plains.
Chief Engineer PDD Kashmir, Hashmat Qazi, said that “heavy” snowfall in the Valley has resulted in trees with thick foliage coming down heavily on electrical lines, damaging most of the 33KV lines.
He said intermittent rainfall and the heavy snowfall led to frequent faults in the electrical system affecting supply in most parts of the uptown and civil line areas of Srinagar.
He said two main trunk lines including Centaur and TRC coming from Cheshmashahi have come down after huge trees fell on them, adding that Karan Nagar and BB Shah lines are also under trees at various places but that restoration process is well underway. The Chief Engineer said the department is doing all that is possible to restore all lines as soon as possible having pressed into service all its men and machinery. However sources said essential power supply to hospitals and other essential services has been restored out of the available 80 megawatts with the department.
Due to disruption of transmission lines, the supply come down to 80 megawatts instead of the usual 1300 megawatts of routine supply, according to the Chief Engineer.
