Srinagar: Notwithstanding principles of natural justice, allowing opportunity of being heard, the Aligarh Muslim University has suspended three Kashmiri students for offering funeral prayers in absentia for scholar-turned-militant Manan Wani who was killed along with associate in a gunfight with the government forces in home district of Kupwara yesterday, a report said on Friday.
“The three Kashmiri students were suspended as they violated the university’s discipline and rules and indulged in unlawful assembly,” The Times of India reported, quoting the university’s proctor Mohsin Khan as having said.
“Four other students who supported the namaz will be issued a show cause notice. The students and their academic details are being identified. Anti-national activities will not be tolerated in the university campus.”
The report said that fifteen Kashmiri students had gathered at Kennedy Hall of the varsity for offering funeral prayers.
A resident of Tikkipora in Kupwara, Wani was pursuing his doctorate in applied geology at the AMU. He pursued a Bachelors in Geology and Earth Sciences degree from University of Kashmir before moving to AMU to complete his MA and M Phil courses.
A “bright student”, Wani had chosen the ‘structural and geo-morphological study of Lolab valley’ as the research topic for his PhD.
