Weapon loot aftermath: Police withdraws SPOs performing PSO duties

Srinagar: Five days after an Special Police officer decamped with seven rifles and pistol from residence of a Peoples’ Democratic Party MLA here, police has ordered withdrawing of SPOs performing duties of Personal Security Officers of protected persons.
“It has been observed that some SPOs are performing PSO duties and all SPOs except SPO drivers, presently attached with protected persons be immediately withdrawn,” Additional Director General of Police has said in an communication sent to all district SSPs and SSP Security Jammu/Kashmir.
The the ADGP has also ordered that henceforth no unit/district SSP shall deploy any SPO for personal security officer duties.
Besides, Range DIGs have been asked to furnish list of all SPOs to the headquarters by October 5 ‘positively’ . “In case any SPO not reports back, honorarium may not be released and nominal roll of such SPOs be furnished to this headquarter so that their disengagement orders are issued.”
SPO, Adil Bashir, decamped with seven rifles and licensed pistol of a PDP MLA from the legislator’s official residence on Friday last. The incident has sent the entire security establishment into a tizzy. Police has also constituted a Special Investigation Team to investigate how the plan to loot weapons from the official residence of a legislator in Srinagar was executed by the special police officer Adil Bashir, a resident of Zainapora Shopian.
