Srinagar: To press the government over their demands, the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyaan (SSA) teachers on Monday begun its indefinite strike at Srinagar.

The SSA teachers under the banner of Teachers Joint Action Committee (TJAC) assembled at Srinagar’s Pratap Park and pegged the temporary there to demand implementation of 7th pay commission and de-linking of their salary from MHRD.

Earlier, TJAC chairman, Abdul Qayoom Wani had threatened to go for indefinite hunger strike from 3rd September, saying that they are waiting for positive initiatives from the government so that teachers may heave a sigh of relief.

However, Wani who was present in the indefinite hunger strike today said that the government has utterly failed to come up to the expectations of the teachers as no concrete steps was taken by the Governor led administration so far, thus forcing the teachers to go on indefinite hunger strike from today.

“The government is pushing the teachers to hit the streets to press for the demands. Pour demands are genuine and should have been fulfilled much earlier,” he said, adding that the government must fulfill the demands of teachers so that they could heave a sigh of relief.

Notably, Wani led delegation called on Advisor to Governor Khursheed Ahmad Ganie at his office in Civil Secretariat Srinagar on Aug 27 this year, urging to him to fulfill the demands of teachers.

The protesting SSA teachers said that they are facing immense hardships as the government was ignoring their plights. “We appeal the government to fulfill our demands at an earliest,” they demanded.

The TJAC chairman further hailed the courage and determination of all the participants of hunger strike, saying that they will not let down the teachers and will not compromise with the honour and dignity of teachers.

“We will continue the hunger strike until and unless the government will take any concrete steps for the welfare of teachers,” Wani added.
