An official said that terrorists opened fire on two migrant workers in Kelam village of south Kashmir’s Kulgam district on Friday evening.

He said one worker died at Government Medical College (GMC) Anantnag on Friday, while the second, who had been referred to SKIMS Srinagar for specialised treatment, succumbed to his injuries on Saturday.

The deceased have been identified as Deepak Rattray (24), son of Uma Shankar, and Bopinder (28), son of Dasrar, both residents of Chhattisgarh working as migrant labourers in Kashmir.

Soon after the attack, security forces rushed to the area, cordoned it off and launched a massive search operation to track down the attackers, the official said.

Police have registered a case and further investigation is underway.

Meanwhile, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha strongly condemned the terror attack and spoke to Director General of Police (DGP) Nalin Prabhat, directing security agencies to intensify anti-terror operations and ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice.

He also expressed condolences to the bereaved families and reiterated that the Jammu and Kashmir administration and the entire nation stand firmly with them.

Notably, this is the second terror attack in Kashmir in the last 10 days. On July 22, a Jammu and Kashmir Police head constable was shot dead at point-blank range by terrorists in the Lal Chowk area of Anantnag district. (KNO)
