Major flood ‘highly unlikely’ but it’s good to be prepared: Dir Met Sonam Lotus

Srinagar: Looking at the forecast, the threat of a major flood was highly unlikely but nevertheless it’s always good to be prepared, Director meteorological department Sonam Lotus said on Friday.

He said that it has been raining continuously since night of June 27 in most parts of state. “Many places of South, East Kashmir and Hilly Areas of Jammu region received heavy rain as a result of which there’s  significant increase in Water Levels in Nallahs, Rivers etc. thereby increasing chances of potential flood, landslide on vulnerable areas,” he said.

Regard forecast, he said, there would be gradual decrease in rainfall from Friday evening and significant and overall improvement from tomorrow.

“There can be landslide in sloppy area, flash flood, minor flood & water logging in low lying areas. People are requested to remain calm but vigilant, prepared and not to spread rumours of flood. Looking at the forecast, the threat of a major flood is highly unlikely but nevertheless, it is always good to be prepared,” he said. .

Since June 27 till 2 p.m Friday, he said Pahallgam received 58mm rainfall, Chandanwari:22mm, Anantnag:76mm, Panjtarni:82mm, Srinagar:22mm, Baltal:11mm, Batote:117.6mm, Ramban:93mm,Pulwama:42mm, Gund:68mm, Jammu:46mm and Kathua 20mm.
