Srinagar: Authorities have imposed restrictions in parts of Shopian and Old City here in wake of the call given by Joint Resistance Leadership against the spurt in civilian killings. At least five civilians were killed in Shopian over the past week. Besides restrictions, the authorities have also suspended train services from Srinagar to South Kashmir.
Sources said curfew like restrictions have been placed in the Shopian district to prevent the march called by the JRL comprising Hurriyat Conference chairmen—Syed Ali Geelani and Mirwaiz Umar Farooq besides Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) chairman. Tough restrictions have been placed in Downtown Srinagar parts also.
Meanwhile, Malik, according to a spokesperson of the party, reached at Jamia Masjid Shopian where he would likely lead a procession against the civilian killings.
Malik had gone into hiding to evade arrest ahead of the proposed march and on early Friday morning, he reached Jamia Masjid Shopian, the spokesperson said.
On Thursday, a 10-year-old Musharaf Fayaz died taking the number of civilians killed in Shopian since January 25 to five. Earlier, a civilian Shakir Ahmad Mir was killed near the site of encounter in Chaigund on January 25 while three civilians were killed after army opened fire on protesters in Ganawpora village on Saturday. While two of the youth—Javed Ahmad Bhat(20) of Balpora and Suhail Javed Lone (24) of Rawalpora Shopian died instantly, Rayees Ahmad Ganie of Narpora succumbed to injuries on Wednesday after battling for life for the five days at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of SKIMS, Soura.
