Zargar Family Bereaved

Srinagar: Family members of Umar Qayoom, a teenager who died a few days after his release from police station Soura in 2010, demanded justice on Sunday, marking the International Human Rights Day. The family held a protest at press enclave here.
Umar died in SKIMS Soura on August 25, 2010, three days after his release from police lockup. His family says he died due to severe torture in police lock-up.
As per the family, his medical report clearly shows death occurred to blunt trauma and ‘diffused intrapulmonary haemorrhage.’
Umar was picked up by police on August 20 along with two other youth, Amir Bashir Sheikh and Irshad Ahmed Bhat.
He was released on August 21 at about 7 pm. The family shifted Umar to SKIMS where he breathed his last on August 25.
“Seven years have passed, no FIR has been registered against the accused personnel,” the protesters, comprising his father and two sisters, said.
His father Abdul Qayoom said: “On that day when he was ruthlessly beaten up, I went to the Police station Soura. The condition of my son was serious as blood was oozing from his body. I begged before the concerned SHO but he didn’t pay any heed and asked me to leave.”
Umar was later released on bail and his father said: “When he was released, he was not in good condition; he was vomiting blood from his mouth.” “We immediately took him to SKIMS wherein doctors declared him half dead.”
The family demands action against those responsible for Umar’s death.
