Budgam, Nov 03: Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi on Tuesday announced his decision to quit the ruling National Conference (NC) and resign as Member of Parliament from Srinagar, while addressing a public gathering at Behisht-e-Zehra Park in Budgam.
Addressing the gathering on the death anniversary of his father, Aga Syed Mehdi, Ruhullah reiterated his differences with the NC leadership, accusing the party of betraying the public mandate and failing to honour its electoral commitments.
Ruhullah said his differences with the party were rooted in principles and political commitments, particularly issues concerning the restoration of Article 370, protection of constitutional rights, reservation and the release of prisoners.
He said his decision was not driven by personal grievances or disappointment over being denied any position within the party, but by his unwillingness to compromise on issues on which the NC had sought public support.
Ruhullah also clarified that his objective was not simply to leave one political party and join another, but to bring together honest and committed youth from Jammu and Kashmir who understand the pain of their homeland and communities.
Appealing to parents, he urged them to encourage their children—whom they had raised with honesty and hard work—to come forward and work towards bringing about change in society.
He said he wanted to build a platform of sincere and dedicated young people committed to public welfare and the betterment of Jammu and Kashmir.
The Srinagar Lok Sabha seat will become vacant only after the Lok Sabha Speaker accepts his formal resignation. Any by-election to the seat will thereafter be held in accordance with applicable legal provisions. (KNO)
