Srinagar, June 1: World No Tobacco Day 2026 was observed at the University of Kashmir with active participation from students, faculty members, healthcare professionals and volunteers in a collaborative programme organised by the Department of Public Health Dentistry, Government Dental College & Hospital (GDCH), Srinagar, and the University Health Centre.

The programme was held to create awareness about the harmful effects of tobacco use, promote healthy lifestyles and strengthen the message of a tobacco-free society under the banner of the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan.

The observance began with a Walkathon and Awareness Rally, flagged off by Vice-Chancellor of the University of Kashmir, Dr. Neelofar Khan. Participants carried placards and spread awareness about the dangers of tobacco consumption and substance abuse.

A series of expert lectures formed a key part of the programme. Dr. Naveed Nazir, Head, Department of Chest Medicine and Pulmonology, delivered a lecture on “Breaking the Habit: Harsh Realities of Tobacco,” highlighting the impact of tobacco on respiratory health and the need for effective cessation interventions.

Dr. Yasir Rather spoke on “Nicotine and the Brain,” explaining the neurobiological basis of nicotine addiction and its effects on mental health and behaviour.

Dr. Aasim Farooq Shah, Head and In-charge, Department of Public Health Dentistry, Government Dental College & Hospital, Srinagar, delivered a lecture on “Behavioural Interventions in Tobacco Cessation,” stressing the importance of counselling, behavioural support and community-based strategies in helping individuals quit tobacco.

The programme also featured a presentation by Dr. Asif Yousuf and Dr. Asifa Ashraf on “Landscape of Tobacco,” focusing on tobacco prevalence, emerging consumption trends and public health challenges.

A major highlight of the event was the awareness generated about the Tobacco Cessation Centre established at the University Health Centre in collaboration with the Department of Public Health Dentistry, GDCH Srinagar. The centre offers counselling, behavioural support, awareness services and guidance to individuals seeking assistance in quitting tobacco.

The organisers acknowledged the contribution of Dr. Khalid Nazir, Coordinator, University Health Centre, University of Kashmir, for his support and coordination in successfully conducting the programme.

The event concluded with an interactive session where participants discussed tobacco cessation strategies and pledged support for the vision of a tobacco-free future and the objectives of the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan.
