Jammu, Sep 14: A 10-member media delegation from Jammu began a press tour of Madhya Pradesh with visits to two of the state’s important archaeological and cultural heritage sites — the historic Siva Temple at Bhojpur and the prehistoric rock shelters of Bhimbetka.
The tour has been organized by the Press Information Bureau (PIB), Jammu, to provide journalists with an opportunity to experience the cultural, historical and developmental landscape of Madhya Pradesh firsthand.
On the first day of the tour, the journalists visited the Siva Temple at Bhojpur, where they were briefed by officials accompanying the delegation on the history and architectural significance of the monument.
The temple, located on the banks of the Betwa River, is known for its imposing proportions, distinctive architectural features and the massive Shiva Lingam housed in its sanctum. The journalists were informed about the temple’s unfinished state and the architectural elements that provide insight into the building techniques and craftsmanship of the period.
The delegation was also briefed on the temple’s unique architectural features, including its massive stone construction and the scale of the structure. Officials explained the historical importance of the site and efforts to preserve the monument as part of the region’s archaeological heritage.
The journalists later proceeded to Bhimbetka, one of India’s most important prehistoric archaeological sites and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
At Bhimbetka, the delegation was briefed on the discovery and archaeological importance of the rock shelters. The site was discovered in 1957-58 by archaeologist Vishnu Shridhar Wakankar. According to information provided at the site, about 750 rock shelters have been identified in the area, with hundreds featuring prehistoric paintings.
The journalists were shown the rock shelters and informed about the paintings that depict aspects of prehistoric human life, including hunting, gathering, animals, dancing and other activities. The paintings, executed using natural pigments, provide an important record of early human habitation and artistic expression.
Officials explained that the archaeological evidence at Bhimbetka spans a very long period of human history, with the site offering insights into the development of human culture and artistic expression. The rock shelters contain evidence of human activity from prehistoric times through later periods.
The delegation’s visit to both sites provided the journalists with an opportunity to understand Madhya Pradesh’s rich archaeological heritage beyond written accounts and photographs.
The PIB officers accompanying the delegation provided detailed briefings at the two locations and facilitated the journalists’ interaction with information related to the historical and cultural importance of the sites.
The press tour is part of an effort to provide media representatives from Jammu with a first-hand understanding of Madhya Pradesh’s heritage, culture and other areas of public interest. The journalists are scheduled to continue their tour in Bhopal and Indore, visiting other significant locations and learning about the state’s cultural and developmental initiatives.
The first day’s itinerary, covering Bhojpur and Bhimbetka, offered the delegation a glimpse into two very different chapters of India’s past — the architectural traditions represented by the Bhojpur temple and the prehistoric human history preserved in the rock shelters of Bhimbetka.
