Srinagar, Jul 14: The Meteorological Department on Tuesday forecast dry and humid weather in Jammu and Kashmir till July 17, warned of a significant wet spell from July 20 onwards, with possibilities of flash floods, cloudbursts and landslides in vulnerable areas.
Director Meteorological Department, Srinagar, Dr Mukhtar Ahmad said light to medium rainfall is likely between July 18 and 19, followed by a more intense spell from July 20 to July 22.
“From July 20 onwards, there are chances of severe weather activity, especially on July 21. There will be thunderstorms and lightning along with rains in many places,” Dr Ahmad said.
He said the Jammu region, particularly the plain areas, and parts of South Kashmir are likely to receive heavy showers, while Central Kashmir, North Kashmir and the rest of Jammu may witness light to medium rainfall.
“Brief intense heavy showers are also likely at isolated places. This may lead to waterlogging in low-lying areas. There are high chances of flash floods and cloudburst-like incidents. Landslides and mudslides cannot be ruled out,” he added.
The Met department has advised tourists, transporters, trekkers and the general public to exercise extreme caution from July 20 onwards. Farmers have been advised to plan irrigation and spraying operations accordingly.
The weather is likely to clear from July 24 onwards, with a brief spell of rain and thundershowers expected on July 23, the official said.
