Srinagar, Apr 28: Describing Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan as a true friend and sympathiser of Jammu and Kashmir, the launch of PMGSY-IV (Batch-II) at SKICC Srinagar witnessed a strong political message on rural connectivity and Centre–UT cooperation, with Chief Minister Omar Abdullah also referring to him as “mama,” a popular public tag associated with him in Madhya Pradesh.

Welcoming the Union Minister, CM Omar said Chouhan had repeatedly supported Jammu and Kashmir in the last one and a half years of the elected government.

“You are not only a friend of J&K but also a true well-wisher. Even in Madhya Pradesh, people call you ‘mama’, and that acceptance reflects the respect you have earned,” the Chief Minister said.

Omar said the relationship with the Union Minister had strengthened over time due to consistent engagement on development matters.

“Whatever sanctions have been given, we will ensure work starts on the ground. In the coming months, we will begin implementation and take forward remaining requirements as well,” he said.

Referring to rural connectivity, the Chief Minister said PMGSY has significantly transformed life in remote and mountainous areas of Jammu and Kashmir.

“People who once had to walk four to five hours to reach a road now have access to motorable connectivity. Due to Phase 2, Phase 3 and now Phase 4, access to hospitals, schools and markets has improved,” CM Omar said.

He added that the government’s focus remains on strengthening rural infrastructure and linking habitations, including those with scattered or small populations in hilly terrain.

“Our real strength lies in villages. Our heritage and economy are rooted in rural areas, and our effort is to strengthen the rural economy in every possible way,” he said.

CM Omar also highlighted ongoing initiatives under rural development and livelihood missions, including self-help group programmes, saying efforts are being made to expand opportunities for women-led enterprises.

He further stressed the need for stronger support to agriculture and horticulture sectors, particularly through crop-based insurance mechanisms, citing weather-related challenges faced by farmers in the Union Territory.

The Chief Minister also assured that all PMGSY-IV sanctioned works will be taken up in mission mode to ensure timely completion and improved connectivity across Jammu and Kashmir.

The programme was attended by senior officials, legislators and representatives from both the Union and UT administrations. (KNO)
