The approval has been granted under Section 36(1) of the J&K Reorganisation Act, 2019, allowing PDP legislator Waheed-ur-Rehman Para to introduce the “Jammu and Kashmir Territorial Administrative Reorganisation Bill, 2026” in the House.

The proposed legislation seeks formation of new divisions, including Chenab Division with headquarters at Doda and Pir Panjal Division with headquarters at Rajouri, besides carving out several new districts in both Kashmir and Jammu regions such as Tral, Ashmuqam, Beerwah, Sopore, Handwara, Sumbal, Tangdhar-Karnah and others. The bill also aims to ensure balanced regional development, administrative efficiency and better public service delivery by addressing challenges posed by difficult terrain and large geographical areas.

The proposal has been submitted to the Assembly Secretariat and is likely to be taken up during the ongoing Budget session, which resumes on March 27, with provisions for discussion on private members’ bills scheduled later in the session. (KNC)
