Srinagar, Feb 24: As part of the ongoing power sector reforms, approximately 11.71 lakh smart electricity meters have been installed across Jammu and Kashmir so far against a total target of around 21 lakh units.

Official figures indicate that the installation drive has crossed the halfway mark, with authorities accelerating efforts to expand coverage in both urban and rural areas. The initiative forms a key component of the broader modernisation programme aimed at improving billing efficiency, reducing transmission losses and ensuring real-time energy monitoring.

Officials associated with the power development sector said that smart meters are being installed in phases, prioritising high-consumption areas and regions with significant aggregate technical and commercial losses. The digital meters enable remote reading, accurate billing and enhanced load management.

The government has maintained that the smart metering project will enhance transparency in electricity consumption, curb power pilferage and strengthen revenue realisation. It is also expected to reduce the need for manual meter reading and minimise billing disputes.

While the rollout has gathered pace in several districts, authorities continue to work towards achieving the full target of 21 lakh installations within the stipulated timeframe.

The smart metering programme is being implemented under central power sector reform schemes aimed at improving the financial sustainability and operational efficiency of distribution utilities in the Union Territory. (KNT)
