Srinagar, Feb 19: The Jammu and Kashmir Waqf Board has responded to concerns raised by MLA Zadibal regarding the recent reconstruction and beautification works at Dargah Hazratbal, stating that the sanctity of the shrine and the sentiments of devotees remain its highest priority.

In an official statement, the Board reiterated that the most sacred and priceless treasure of the shrine is the revered Moi-e-Muqaddas, the Holy Relic of Prophet Muhammad Mustafa (SAW).

“Every step taken at the shrine is guided by reverence, responsibility, and a deep awareness of the emotions attached to this holy place,” the statement said.

Clarifying the recent installation of chandeliers, including the replacement of the old chandelier in the main sanctum, the Board explained that the decision was made after careful consideration of structural safety, preservation needs, and aesthetic harmony. The new chandelier, inscribed with Quranic Ayaat, has been designed to enhance the spiritual ambience while maintaining the traditional character of the shrine.

The Board emphasized that the previous chandelier and other removed items have not been discarded. “All old fixtures have been carefully preserved and stored in accordance with established procedures. Nothing of historical or sentimental value has been lost,” it stated. While acknowledging the right of elected representatives to raise questions, the Waqf Board appealed for sensitivity in matters concerning religious institutions.

“Dargah Hazratbal is not merely a structure; it is a symbol of faith for millions. Discussions related to its upkeep should reflect unity, respect, and collective responsibility,” the statement noted.

The Board further said that the renovation and beautification works were undertaken to ensure better facilities, improved safety, and a more serene environment for devotees. According to the statement, the response from the public has largely been positive, with many visitors appreciating the enhanced atmosphere of dignity and calm.

Without engaging in direct confrontation, the Board expressed hope that such matters would not become subjects of political contestation. “Faith binds people together. It must remain above divisions and debates. Our sole objective is to serve the shrine and its devotees with sincerity and transparency,” it added.

Concluding its response, the Waqf Board reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the sanctity of the Holy Relic and preserving the spiritual legacy of Dargah Hazratbal, while continuing to undertake improvements that honor both tradition and the needs of present and future generations.
