This recognition places him among an elite group of scholars selected nationwide, underscoring his contribution to the cultural and artistic landscape of Jammu & Kashmir.

Mushtaaque’s research project, titled “Kashmiri Theatre – An In-Depth Study Since Independence”, will examine the evolution of Kashmiri theatre over the past seven decades. His work aims to document the artistic journey of theatre in the region, tracing its roots, transformations, and resilience in the face of social and political changes. By situating Kashmiri theatre within the broader narrative of Indian performing arts, the study is expected to highlight both its unique identity and its role in shaping cultural discourse.

The ‘Tagore Research Scholarship’ is one of the most respected fellowships offered by the ‘Ministry of Culture’, designed to encourage advanced research in the fields of literature, performing arts, and cultural studies. This year, a total of 35 scholars across India have been awarded the fellowship.

Significantly, Mushtaaque Ali Ahmad Khan is the only recipient from Jammu & Kashmir, making his selection not just a personal achievement but also a moment of pride for the region.

His recognition reflects the growing importance of Kashmiri cultural heritage within the national framework and provides an opportunity to bring the richness of local theatre traditions to wider audiences. The fellowship will enable him to pursue rigorous research, contribute to academic scholarship, and inspire future generations of artists and researchers.
