After recording submissions from the petitioners and the Centre, Chief Justice of India BR Gavai, dictated the order, granting four weeks time to the Centre to respond to statehood demand.

The Chief Justice, while citing Pahalgam terror attack, said that the decision of statehood restoration is to be taken after taking all factors into consideration.

Earlier, senior advocate Gopal Sankarnarayanan on behalf of the petitioners submitted that statehood was taken away in 2019 and we are now in 2025. “Now for reasons best known to them enough water has flown under the bridge and elections have also been held,” he said.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta interjected and said thet not only water much blood had also flown. He also submitted that elections took place peacefully, and factors such as Pahalgam incident must be considered before granting statehood and that Union and State Govt are in consultation.

After hearing the submissions from both the side, the Chief Justice granted four weeks weeks time to the Union to respond to Jammu and Kashmir statehood demand. (KNO)
