7 dead in Ghati, Kathua flash floods, Rescue Ops underway

Kathua, Aug 17: The death toll from the devastating flash floods and landslides in Kathua district has risen to seven after a cloudburst hit the Ghati area on Sunday morning.

An official said that seven people have died in the incident and the rescue operations are still underway.

The cloudburst, which struck the Ghati area, has caused widespread damage, affecting several houses, a local police station, railway tracks, and stretches of the National Highway in the Janglot and nearby areas, official said.

The deceased has been identified as Renu Devi, wife of Parveen Singh, aged 39, resident of Bagra, Janglot, Tehsil Kathua. Radhika, daughter of Parveen Singh, aged 9, resident of Bagra, Janglot, Tehsil Kathua. Surmu Din, aged 30, son of Bashir Ahmed, resident of Jode, Tehsil and District Kathua.

Fanu, aged 6, son of Surmu Din, resident of Jode, Tehsil and District Kathua. Shedu, aged 5, son of Surmu Din, resident of Jode, Tehsil and District Kathua. Tahu, aged 2, son of Habib Deen, resident of Jode, Tehsil and District Kathua. Zulfan, aged 15, daughter of Bashir Ahmed, resident of Jode, Tehsil and District Kathua, official said.

Rescue teams are working to clear debris and provide assistance and relief to the affected families. (KNC)
