The case came to light on March 16, 2025, when Kokernag Police Station received a complaint regarding the disappearance of a girl (identity withheld). Acting swiftly, the police launched an investigation into the matter.

During the probe, technical evidence pointed towards a possible abduction, with suspicion falling on Altaf Mir, a 31-year-old resident of Lawaypora, Srinagar.

An FIR (No. 15/2025) was initially registered under sections 87 and 49 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). As the investigation progressed, the suspect was taken into custody for questioning, where he confessed to the crime. Following his disclosure, police recovered the victim’s body from his residence in Lawaypora, Srinagar.

In light of the new findings, additional charges under sections 64 and 103 of the BNS were added to the FIR to reflect the severity of the offense.

“Police have sent the body for postmortem and forensic examination to gather further evidence. Legal proceedings are ongoing, and the police are committed to ensuring a thorough investigation,” SSP Anantnag said.

He added that justice will be served, and the accused, along with any other individuals involved, will face the strictest legal action. [KNT]
